Organizations require continual adjustment in order to stay alive in today’s highly competitive and complex global marketplace. The challenge is to be able to manage a consistent and dynamic view of business process across the enterprise. But, if you are like most that are tackling this problem, silos of process knowledge exist across the organization. (such as in the figure below.) Each of these silos contain their own set of process knowledge, consisting of process diagrams in a variety of notations, created using a variety of modelling tools, and referenced to a number of internal and external documents, spreadsheets and guidelines, evolved over time, and possibly out of date.

In the typical silo-based setup, process information may be communicated between silos, but not in a predictable or formal fashion. For example how does a process change by a re-engineering group in one of the silos get communicated to the relevant operational risk and compliance groups? Can an impact analysis be conducted on a proposed process change from a compliance perspective – or does one have to wait until a regular audit to identify breeches in key controls? It is possible to identify what processes across an organization would be impacted by a proposed change in legislation? These are just a few of the many questions that can be considered by a process-mature organization.
